Hyundai H-1: Is the Korean minibus worth 2 million rubles
The updated Hyundai H1 is designed to work in our market as a taxi, compact city bus and business shuttle. "RG" tested the modernized model in order to understand all the nuances of the "Korean" specialization.
The predecessors of the Hyundai H-1 minibus, known in South Korea and some other markets as the Grand Starex, trace their ancestry back to the Mitsubishi Delica. However, the first generation H-1, which debuted in 1996, was already, strictly speaking, an authentic product. Having survived a series of restyling, this model changed a generation only in 2007, after which there were several more updates, which is interesting - they had features in various markets. So, the second generation "Korean" arrived to us this year with a radically modernized exterior, but almost untouched by a restyled interior.
At the same time, in some other markets, including the Korean one, the developers offered customers a choice of various design and layout options for the saloon and cockpit. So, in the US Hyundai H1 Buses & Microbuses in Ghana A and in the homeland of the brand, you can buy both a cheaper version with a cabin and salon in the style of the 90s, and a new, ultra-fashionable and, accordingly, more expensive version (called Urban) with ergonomic seats, a fashionable front panel with sharp facets, as in Hyundai new passenger cars, and a large floating central multimedia display. In the salons of cars for Russia, you can find only additional decor options, repurposed ventilation deflectors, as well as visually separated blocks of climate and audio systems.
The appearance of the Korean minibus is clearly a success. Having provided the "front end" with strict and even harsh horizontal lines, adding aggressiveness to the radiator grille and optics with fashionable diode strips of running lights, the designers modernized the exterior in one fell swoop, making it more attractive and establishing a stylistic connection with the new Hyundai passenger cars.
The diagonal glass line of the front doors, camouflaged B-pillars and roof aerial fin are eye-catching. However, details such as the chubby exterior handles of sliding doors look old-fashioned after all. But a powerful plastic body kit and a ground clearance of 190 mm are modern practical solutions that enhance the attractiveness of the model. In general, the exteriors deserve a compliment - they managed to modernize the H-1 without fundamentally changing the body architecture.
And what about the eight-seater saloon, which strongly resembles the interior of its predecessor? On the one hand, the design solutions and the selection of decorative materials correspond here to the fashion of the early 2000s. However, this nuance is offset by good ergonomics. The dashboard with white scales and large numbers is easy to read, the steering wheel is adjustable in both planes over a wide range. The quality of fit of the parts, one might say, is impeccable, but, of course, it does not smell of high cost, despite the fact that soft plastic is used in the finish, and the seats of the older configurations (as in the test car) are sheathed with genuine leather. Perhaps the main ergonomic blunder is the extremely small number of niches for "small things" in the cockpit. There is no place even to stick a telephone.
The list of on-board electronics positions, unfortunately, is not very extensive, but the essentials are there. For example, a rear-view camera (option) transmits a miniature picture behind the "stern" to the salon rear-view mirror, there is an onboard computer, but for some reason there is no data on fuel consumption in it. But there is such a rare option for the mass LCV segment as a heated steering wheel, as well as ventilation for the driver's seat, automatic folding mirrors and climate control with separate control. At the same time, a keyless engine start system, an electric seat drive, and more importantly, sliding and rear doors for this model cannot be ordered in Russia. There is only one USB slot in the driver's area, and there are no 12 V power sockets on the second and third rows. In other words, the set of equipment once again confirms that the H-1 in its Russian specification is not a car for a family, but for a business.
The second row passengers are the most comfortable in this LCV. Not only is there a huge distance to the backs of the front seats, if you wish, you can easily get up and move from the middle sofa to the front passenger seat - the op
