Laptop HP EliteBook 8440P 6GB Intel Core I5 HDD 500GB
Review HP EliteBook 8440p-WJ681AW Notebook
Those who need a laptop as a constant companion, of course, need more than a display with a keyboard. This 14-inch model wants to prove its high-end claims in terms of the connectivity, sturdiness and power of the Core i5-520M.
Who Buys EliteBooks? We have some idea about this. In our review recently, we reviewed the HP ProBook 6540b WD690EA, which limited the EliteBook lineup to the bottom. You can probably say, “If you are not happy with the ProBook, then you should buy the EliteBook. Pricey business models start at around € 1150.
We chose one of the lowest priced EliteBooks. From the top, the price is almost unlimited, since HB also placed its workstations under the name "EliteBook" by adding "w". Our 14 "8440p is technically limited to a Core i5-520M base and doesn't have a dedicated graphics card. There is also no high definition screen and no UMTS module.
What, then, is his claim to the EliteBook? What does it do better than the already good ProBook 6540b WD690EA? Is the elite al Laptop HP EliteBook 8440P 6GB Intel Core I5 HDD 500GB ternative worth it to ambitious buyers, or is it better to buy the ProBook together, which costs a lot less? Our in-depth review has answers to these questions.
Anti-twist housing
While laptop lines are getting thinner, flatter and lighter, the HB clearly adds a little to ensure more stability. This 14-inch actually looks massive. Its highest part is 3.1 centimeters. We also noticed that what we need to carry with us weighs 2363 grams. It would be a mistake to believe that business users are not looking at weight. However, the manufacturer uncompromisingly took the side of high quality and stability.
The base block is as strong as a stone and does not twist in any way, even with the use of force. We could not push it through either in the palm rest or on the base panel. The strength of the lid is almost sensational. We were able to twist it only at the corners and very little. The silver area held out until the end. Of course, we were able to push through a little with the help of selective pressure. But this is not possible in the entire region.
The reason for this quality lies in the selection of materials. The lid, palm rest and strip above the keys are made of aluminum. This way the surface feels cool and is very scratch resistant. The manufacturer also used metal for the hinges, just like in the ProBook. The hinges fit snugly against the base unit. No amount of yanking or pressure can move them. They hold the lid firmly in place (no wobble). Despite the heavy weight of the base unit, we were able to open the laptop with one hand.
What looked like a large silver button on the display turned out to be a button for opening a massive lock (metal) that allows the lid to rise by about half a centimeter. This gap is enough to open the display with one hand.
The same applies to the battery. Instead of pressing the two locks with two fingers, we can simply press the eject of the battery and it will exit its compartment on its own. This way the battery can be removed with one hand.
Professionals and discerning users alike will appreciate its docking station and a variety of interfaces for all sorts of needs. The 14-inch has everything you would expect from a modern work laptop. The nearly extinct modem port (RJ-11), display port, FireWire (i-Link) and eSATA, among others. If there are no dedicated interfaces, then users have the option to modify via the ExpressCard54 slot. Instead of HDMI, it uses a display port. This port allows the external display to have a resolution of 2560x1600 pixels.
We liked the rear location of the Kensington lock, display port, and VGA. The attachment of a conventional lid makes this possible. On the left is the battery of three USB and FireWire ports. There is also an ExpressCard54 slot next to it. ExpressCard34 cards are also suitable. The audio jacks are located directly below this slot.
There are no interfaces at the front. Great importance was attached to the right side. The eSATA port is rather unusual for business notebooks. There is even FireWire, which is located next to it. The eSATA port provides fast data transfer to external eSATA hard drives. They work just as quickly as if they were located inside.
There are two card readers here. One for memory cards (SD, MMC) on the front side of the case and another for SmartCards on the right.
