Mireia Lopez Montoya joined the Roman brand in 2014 and with her came the first Bvlgari fashion bags, followed by scarves, sunglasses and leather accessories. Bags quickly fell in love with fashionistas, became recognizable bestsellers and gained the status of a style standard, and the profit from the sale of accessories in the company has been growing every year since then. Kommersant Style met with the designer in Moscow and asked how it managed to achieve such success and what can be found in the brand's boutiques as gifts for the New Year.
- How did it happen that Bvlgari bags became so popular in five years?
“I don’t want to talk in numbers, but when it comes to bag profits, our business is bigger than many of the fashion brands that were showcased at Paris and Milan fashion weeks. Within the LVMH group, Bvlgari is the third largest brand, and the accessories department is a very significant part of it. We don't talk about it too much, we just quietly and very successfully do our job.
- How exactly are Bvlgari bags different from all th Blvgari Handbags e others?
- When I first came, I was faced with the question of what Bvlgari bags should be, after all, this is a jewelry brand, and there are so many beautiful bags of large fashion brands in the world.
We have defined for ourselves what exactly is the DNA of the brand, and today we have a very clear understanding of what we can do and what we do not want at all.
Firstly, color is very important for us, for which the Bvlgari house is famous for love. Secondly, all the motifs of the bags are inspired by the brand's jewelry art. Thus, the snake motif, important for the brand, formed the basis of the Serpenti Forever bag, which over these five years has become our bestseller, a very fashionable bestseller. And thirdly, craftsmanship: very few manufacturers can boast of how we approach the production of metal parts. As a jewelry brand, we can afford the highest quality workmanship.

- Where is Bvlgari production located?
- In Florence. All the main and most important processes take place in our own factory, some we outsource, but all only in Florence.
- How do you test comfort and practicality?
- In our factory in Florence there is a special room where we put our bags under a wide variety of tests. We test them for the resistance of the skin to extreme temperatures (both cold and heat), go down the steps and see if the parts break at the same time. There is also a tensile test where a bag is opened and closed thousands of times in a row. For us, this is part of quality control. We are also wondering how to make the bag more functional. That's why we launched the Diamond Blast bag - unlike the Serpenti Forever, it's more spacious and more suitable for carrying all day long. And the length of the chains on our bags can be adjusted and chosen to suit any height.
- How do you choose which of the many fashion trends to use?
- Whatever the fashion trends, we always have bags of gem colors: green (like an emerald), red (like a ruby) and blue (like a sapphire). They are followed by bags of metallic leather. Therefore, as soon as metallic appears in the top of trends, we immediately take it to work. In our interpretation, it has three shades of gold: pink, yellow and white. These are our permanent colors plus we always have seasonal colors that we also name after specific gemstones.
If a strong mainstream emerges, like street fashion now, we try to find a solution to how to get into this current and remain ourselves.
